Concept

Beyond The Cliche has two main objectives: To document the positive influences left by the revolution during Cuba's historic transition, and to create channels for discourse. The vision for this project is to photographically narrate what will become an important educational documentary demonstrating vestiges of what has been beneficial under Fidel Castro's rule.

Over the past forty years resources such as schools in rural communities, government supplied health care, and fair distribution of food has achieved much for the Cuban people. Cuba has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world, one of the highest literacy rates (nearly all of their citizens are educated through the sixth grade), and the highest per capita indices of teachers, doctors and physical education instructors in the world.

Since then 1961, when the US banned trade and travel to Cuba, images we see have neglected to tell the whole story, the human story. This project intends to find the truth that surpasses the stereotypes. We can learn from Cuba; through photographic documentation, a resource for dialogue and discussion can be created.

Biography

Anna Mia Davidson views photography as a powerful tool for positive social change and uses it to document the lives of endangered cultures in transition. Davidson's connection to Central American cultures began in 1994 while photographing and working as a solidarity worker in the post war mountain villages of El Salvador.
Davidson's connection to Cuba began in 1999, when she started documenting the island nation. Davidson gained tremendous access there, and was granted permission to enter facilities normally forbidden to outsiders. She has returned to photograph multiple times over the last several years.
