Concept

Subhankar Banerjee's current project began in 2000 as a study of the ecological and cultural diversity of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in all four seasons. His vision has since evolved into a visual exploration of the Arctic's connection to larger global issues such as resource wars (oil, coal and natural gas development), climate change, toxic migration, and human rights struggles of the indigenous northern communities. He has been working in several geographic regions in the Arctic, including Alaska (USA), Yukon (Canada), and Siberia (Russia). In 2006, he began a project in the Desert of New Mexico where he and his wife currently live. The geographic extent of the project is five miles around their home in New Mexico. His Arctic and Desert series together are simply addressing two issues home and food that land provides to humans as well as to numerous other species with whom we share this Earth. He calls it land as home.

Biography

Indian born American artist, writer, educator, and activist Subhankar Banerjee uses photography to raise awareness about issues that threaten the health and well-being of our planet. Since 2000 he has focused much of his efforts on indigenous human rights and land conservation issues in the Arctic, and more recently in the Desert environment of New Mexico. His Arctic photographs have been exhibited in more than fifty museums and galleries in the United States and Europe and published in over one hundred magazines and newspapers internationally. He has received many awards including Artist-in-Residence at Dartmouth College, inaugural Cultural Freedom Fellowship from Lannan Foundation, and inaugural Greenleaf Artist Award from the United Nations Environment Programme.
